Climate Change in Focus

The object "Climate Change in Focus" is addresses the perishability and fragility of the polar regions and the associated global climate change.
The central element is our blue planet, symbolized by a broken globe that is completely covered with water.
Embedded inside is a broken hourglass that stands for the time which is running out in the fight against climate change and points to the urgent need for action.
In the top of this broken hourglass lies a patch of real preserved snow on top of a meltwater lake, depicting the rapid melting of the polar regions and their immediate threat. A real arctic snowflake captured on Leg 3 of the MOSAiC expedition sits embedded in the snow It was collected on May 5th, 2020 aboard Polarstern.

Das Objekt „Klimawandel im Fokus“ thematisiert die Vergänglichkeit und Fragilität der Polregionen und des damit zusammenhängenden Weltklimas.
Zentrales Element ist unser blauer Planet, symbolisiert durch einen aufgebrochenen Globus, der schier schon gänzlich mit Wasser bedeckt ist.
Innen eingebettet befindet sich eine zerbrochene Sanduhr, die für die ablaufende Zeit im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel steht und auf den dringenden Handlungsbedarf hinweist.
Im oberen Teil der Sanduhr liegt ein Stück echter konservierter Schnee auf einem Schmelzwassersee, der das rapide Schmelzen der Polregionen und ihre Bedrohung darstellt. Auf dem Schnee liegt eingebettet eine echte arktische Schneeflocke des dritten Fahrtabschnitts der MOSAiC Expedition gesammelt am 05.05.2020 an Bord von Polarstern.

Below the surface

"Below the surface" is a project to illustrate the percolation process in snow. Percolation means the seepage of liquid meltwater from the surface through the snowpack.
This project aims to enable an insight into the invisible processes of snow. Shown are two negative impressions of meltwater channels flowing towards each other.

Dieses Objekt veranschaulicht den sogenannten Perkolationsprozess im Schnee. Perkolation bezeichnet das Durchsickern von Schmelz- oder Regenwasser von der Oberfläche durch die Schneedecke. Auf diese Art werden die normalerweise nicht sichtbaren Prozesse unter der Schneeoberfläche abgebildet. Das Objekt besteht aus zwei Negativabdrücken von Schmelzwasserkanälen, die aufeinander zufließen. Die feinen Verästelungen bilden den Porenraum des Schnees ab. Under Pressure

Under Pressure
The project Under Pressure is a specially developed hand-made 7-fold optical bench with 21 lenses, to show the life cycle and the metamorphosis of the ice in the ageing process and under great pressure in the depth of a glacier. Starting with a snowflake to the transition to firn and progressing to ice in five depth sections and different ages back up to about 400,000 years at a depth of 650 m.

Das Kernstück dieses Projekts ist eine speziell entwickelte, handgefertigte 7-fach Optische Bank zur Darstellung des Lebenszyklus beziehungsweise der Veränderung des Eises im Alter und unter zunehmendem Druck in der Tiefe des Gletschers. Beginnend mit einer Schneeflocke zum Übergang in Firn und im Verlauf weiter zu Eis in fünf Tiefenabschnitten und unterschiedlichem Alter bis 400 000 Jahre in 650 m Tiefe zurück.

Icy underground sculptures

Preserved ice crystals from a 10 m deep snow trench in the Antarctic near Neumayer-Station. A crystal takes about one to two years to grow, depending on humidity.

300 year old preserved piece of the Dyer III ice core, drilled in 1991 in Antarctica.
The base is formed by a stone from the Kottas Mountains (Antarctica)
With a symbolized drilling down to bedrock, by use of a gear wheel from a PistenBully from Neumayer III Station.

300 Jahre alte, konservierte Scheibe aus dem Dyer III Eiskern, gebohrt 1991 auf der antarktischen Halbinsel. Den Grundstock bildet ein Stein aus den Kottas Bergen (Antarktis). Das Zahnrad stammt aus einem PistenBully der Neumayer III Station und symbolisiert die Bohrung zum Felsbett.
